Matthew is a Senior Building Surveyor with over 20 years of experience in the municipal and private building surveying sectors in NSW and has worked on many projects throughout the state and country.

Tell us about your current role at BCA Logic? What does your job entail? What is a typical day like?

I am a Senior Building Regulations Consultant and basically provide advice relating to the Building Code of Australia and how its applied to different types of buildings. My typical day involves providing advice on a building design, buildings under construction and existing building’s level of compliance.

How did you break into this industry and why?

It was by accident. I was due to begin study in Welfare work but at the last minute I decided it wasn’t for me. At the time the government was funding various courses and so I enrolled in Health and Building Surveying simply because it sounded good. The deal was I also had to do a computing course at the same time, prior to WWW and Windows being a thing.

What has been your proudest achievement in your career?

The fact that I’ve been able to work across various levels and areas of government and the private sector, and gain an understanding of the different functions of buildings depending on who they serve.

What do you like most about your job?

Visiting the many types of buildings that are around and the various ways they are used.

What do you like to do when you aren’t working?

Tending to my vegetable crop as though they are children.
